Adopting an Airedale Terrier Rescue Dog

The medium-sized and energetic Airedales have always been known for their jack-of-all-trades abilities. They were originally bred in England to hunt otters and they also worked on the farm controlling rodents. Did you know that Airedales were the first dogs trained to be canine officers? Some have been trained for search and rescue missions, as well as for being a service dog. In wartimes, they were once used to guard and carry equipment and messages. Airedale terrier rescue organizations will tell you that they can track like a hound, bring prey to hand like a retriever and flush out prey like a spaniel. They also do well in performance sports like agility and obedience.

You might assume that Airedales would be easy to train. However, it can be a frustrating experience because they are easily bored. Therefore, to be successful, keep it lively, perhaps by changing the routine. Otherwise, they will lose interest after they have learned the behavior and may no longer listen to your commands. The trainer needs to be calm, confident and consistent. Known as the “king of the terriers,” the airedale is intelligent and sweetly natured; however, it can be stubborn and strong willed, standing up for themselves when challenged. An Airedale terrier rescue will caution you that they have a tendency to chase other animals, so listen to their recommendations on how to counter this. They will also tell you that Airedales need constant reinforcement. Airedales should be socialized early with other dogs and with children; if not, they may play too rough with toddlers. They can also be rowdy if they don’t have the proper mental and physical exercise.

If you are considering an Airedale adoption, you will need to fill out an application, and some rescue organizations also require home visits, all to ensure that the adoption is to a loving, forever home. The benefits you gain from an Airedale terrier rescue include a dog grateful to have a second chance. The fact that they have received any needed medical treatment, will be spayed or neutered and current on their vaccinations is just icing on the cake. You will be gaining a loving and protective family dog that will be happy to please you (most of the time).

Most animal rescues operate only with donations from the public. All the food, grooming, medical treatments, vaccinations and care usually add up to more than the funds received when new owners adopt, and Airedale terrier rescue organizations face these same concerns. But they all rescue, not for money, but for the love of animals.
